Workshops by Ken Mercer

Ken Mercer has been teaching students for almost 30 years and is well known for his passion, patience and expertise in the trade of cabinetmaking. Ken Mercer was a professor and coordinator in the Industrial Woodworking Techniques (Cabinetmaking) program at Mohawk College. He is also a Skills Canada – Ontario Klaus Woerner Skilled Trades Hall of Fame and a past winner of the Mohawk College president’s award of excellence.

Calculations for Conventional Kitchen Cabinet Build (6 hours - 12 students max.) 
Build your own cabinets and save thousands of dollars or build for others for extra income. Learn how to calculate every part (cabinet sizes, door sizes, drawer sizes, stiles, rails, shelves, supporting hardware, countertops, appliance allowances and costs) and cut them to size knowing that everything will fit together with confidence. Build is calculated in Imperial measurement (calculator is advised).

Quality Finishing Techniques Workshop (4 hours - 12 students max.) 
Have you ever built a beautiful piece of furniture but the finish didn't turn out as expected? Spend time with a professional finisher to see how to properly prepare the wood, learn different techniques including applying stain, glazing, shading, antiquing, different top coatings, and hand rubbed finishes. Give that quality piece of furniture the beautiful finish that it deserves. Learn tricks of the trade, where to source the products that you need and safe practice.
