Vic Tesolin demonstrates a practical hybrid approach for anyone without a jointer in the shop. He will flatten one face of a rough board by hand, then sends it through a thickness planer to finish the job. He’ll show how to read grain direction and check for flat before the board ever reaches the planer, and how that first hand-planed reference surface sets up everything after it.
