Project Workshop 2019

Learn How to Build your Own Hand Tools

There is really nothing as gratifying as making your own woodworking tools. Making tools used to be part of a woodworker's life

but it happens less often in these modern times. Join Steve Der-Garabedian and Vic Tesolin for a weekend of making your own

Japanese-style tools. Each Day Steve and Vic will build one of three tools that will allow you to step up your hand tool game.

Join the guys for all kinds of tips, tricks and or course, laughter as Steve and Vic teach you how to build these staple tools.

Join

Vic & Steven for the Weekend

As they share their knowledge on how to build your own hand tools.

Make sure to drop in after the seminar to ask your woodworking questions.

Seminar Times

Friday

  • Japanese-style Planing Board 11 AM-12 PM; 12:30 PM-1:30 PM; 2 PM-3 PM

It all starts with a versatile planing board that is unique to pull planes. The squaring fence is nearest to the user and also has a large rabbet to allow easy shooting. There are dog holes for surfacing operations where you can use individual dogs or a planing stop. This planing board can also be used for sawing as well, so you can cross-cut a board to length then refine the surface and size with the plane.

Saturday

  • East Meets West Bench Plane 11 AM-12 PM; 12:30 PM-1:30 PM; 2 PM-3 PM

Steve and Vic will make a bench plane that you pull instead of push. Vic has developed this design by combining the function of a Japanese plane and blending the construction styles of both a Krenovian plane with an old English plane. The result is a plane that is relatively easy to make and a joy to use. The plane uses a single iron that is bedded bevel down at a relatively low angle which makes it perfectly suited for endgrain work and surfacing on mild grain wood. With no mechanical adjuster, the plane blade is held in with a forked wedge and adjusted with a hammer.
